My favorite iconic movie house list.

Dear all,

Thank you so much for being on the precipice of reading a blog post I have wanted to write for so long. I have kept putting off sending it out because I keep wanting to add to it. I am cutting it off today and sending it out. One of my most favorite things about movies are the houses and set design in them. So here is a list in order of love, for your viewing pleasure!

She Devil House
This is my all-time favorite house in a movie forever and ever. It's the ultimate femme paradise. I loved this movie as a kid, and I realize now, it's because I love the artistic direction of the real estate. The exterior is perfection, but even more perfect, if it was even possible, is the bedroom design. This is a cinematic marvel, and pretty much the best thing ever.

Momma's House in Forrest Gump
Forrest Gump is one of my all-time favorites. I try to watch it every year. I cry every time. I love every second of this film. The magic, the safety, the originality, the modesty, and the grace of Momma's house are so real you can almost smell it, feel it, taste it. The yard is enviable, and the double-decker porch and frontal facade draw me right in. I would love to live in a house like this someday. I would probably need at least 10 of my Roombas (currently I have 1) to help me keep it clean.

The Beast's Mansion from Beauty and the Beast
So epic. And the library is by far my favorite part. An actual dream. The set illustrations from so many Disney movies (Lady and the Tramp, Peter Pan) really make me feel some sort of way. Comfort, really. I love the set artwork from those older movies. Beauty and the Beast is a little contemporary, but it still made the list as a favorite for me.

Elaine Park's House in The Love Witch
The Love Witch came out in 2016 and took my breath away. The house that Elaine moves into in Eureka, California is so spooky and beautiful. If you haven't seen this movie yet, the art direction and sets are to die for. It is SO funny and good. Just the real estate alone is worth the watch.

Xanadu in Citizen Kane
I can't write this and leave out Xanadu. This is arguably the most iconic house in cinematic history other than the house from Psycho, which is not on my favorite list because of obvious reasons(!). Growing up in Santa Barbara, Hearst Castle was always very close by. San Simeon is just a quick drive. Citizen Kane is a very emotional movie for me. Rosebud.

Father of the Bride House from Father of the Bride
I just can't with this one. This house represents so much for me. Growing up, I had a somewhat unconventional housing situation at my Dad's where I lived half the time.  Living in a carriage house from the 1800s that was small and funky (that's a nice way to put it) was normal to me, but as I grew and grew I realized, it wasn't normal to everyone else.

The house in Father of the Bride was a symbol to me, and many of my contemporaries, of 90's idealism and perfection. Something that eluded me in the 90's. The interior design is quintessential 90's country mom. This house is not only a beautiful home in Pasadena, the most beautiful part of LA in my opinion, but also a dreamy feeling, a vibe, and lifestyle all in one.

Manderley in Rebecca (1940)
I love to read books and I really love mysteries and thrillers. Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier is probably an all-time top 5 book list spot holder. And the movie did it justice. Manderley is the house in this book, and the house in the movie does not disappoint. I think about Manderley a lot, and I love it. So here it is on this list. Read the book, it's SO good.

Edward's House in Edward Scissorhands
The brooding Edward lives in his beautiful, dark, and gothic mansion all alone, making topiary and dreaming of Kim his whole life, making it snow, just for magical her. I love this house even though some people might think it's creepy. I think it's really sweet. I will always wonder how he got it? Inheritance? It must have been.

The Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse
I don't think I need to say anything else.

I would love to hear what's on your favorite movie house list. Please share. I hope you enjoyed this and have a great weekend!

Sincerely
